Top Questions You Should Not Be Asked
Top Questions You Should Not Be Asked In an interview, its all about the questions. The conversation is pretty much a standard question-and-answer format for the most part. But there are some questions that should not be asked because it is illegal to do so. Federal and state anti-discrimination laws are designed to get you hired based on your skills, not a stereotype. Doostang recently posted a list of Ten Questions You Should Never Be Asked In An Interview. Its a clear list of questions that could be discriminatory and the possible fair questions that would be similar. The basic categories are simple: Who you are your race, national origin, disabilities, age, gender, marital/parental status. These things should not affect your job in themselves, although being eligible to work in this country (national origin) or capable of doing the job with/without accommodation (disability, age) can be fair questions. What background you have bankruptcy, arrest records, type of military discharges might come up in a security check, but they should have disclaimers or be part of a credit check you approve. They shouldnt be reasons not to hire you. Which groups you belong to political, social, religious groups or unions; if the employer is a religious association, they can give preference to those belonging to their religion, but for the most part, it shouldnt be asked. Job-related groups like professional associations are different. There are many reasons an inappropriate question comes up during an interview. Often, it has nothing to do with wrong motives. The interviewer is just unaware they crossed a line. Your response can be professional, tactful, and firm without creating more problems. Try answering in the form of how it affects your job. I am able to fill all the requirements of this position sounds a lot better than That is a discriminatory question! You have no right to ask me that! Of course, if they push it, you could go there if its clear you are dealing with discrimination. But be professional, tactful, and firm about it and youll have a better response. It is important to be prepared for potentially discriminatory questions, and that is part of your interviewing skills. There are a number of helpful posts when you follow the link, and each one will give you good advice. 7 Ways to Create A Great Cover Letter -
7 Ways to Create A Great Cover Letter -Cover Letter Tips A great guest post from Erin KennedyCover letters seem to be difficult for people, even resume writers. Why is that? What makes a good titelseite letter?Cover letters can be fun to write. There really arent many rules to writing them. You can let your personality shine through. They allow you to positively present your skills, accomplishments, and credentials in a way that will encourage the reader to want to read even mora about you (and then move on to the resume). There are lots of things I can get into in more depth (types of resumes, scope, presentation, who your audience is, etc.) but for now, I am just going to touch on the basics. In future posts, I will dissect cover letters more closely. Here are some easy ideas to keep in mind when writing your cover letterMake sure your intention is clear. In other words, what is the job you are applying for? Clearly state it. Dont make the reader guess. You could say something like , and this is why my qualifications make me a perfect match for the Sales Management stelle.Highlight your top achievements. You dont have to rewrite everything you wrote in the resume, just summarize some of your top accomplishments. Wow them with what you have done.Add your relevant skills or qualifications. Let the reader know what you excel at and what you are capable of. This is a great place to talk about any extra credentials or training youve had that relate to the position.Write toward the position you are applying for. When preparing the cover letter, keep in mind the requirements of the position and add your qualifications that match them.Explain what it is you like about the company. Remember, you are trying to woo the company, so tell them what you like about them. Is it the reputation, products/services, location? Let them know why you like them. You are not writing your autobiography. Keep it short, simple and factual. You dont need to go into why the last job didnt wo rk out, my boss had unrealistic expectations of the staff, so I decided to check out my options. Dont air your dirty laundry or obvious dislike of your fruchtwein recent employer. Keep it professional.Double check the entire document for accuracy, errors, and syntax. You dont want to miss a great opportunity because you wrote, Dear Hiring Manger.Another tip is to save that cover letter, copy and paste it onto a new document, and tweak it for another type of position you may be interested in. I encourage clients to have several focused cover letters for different positions they might have in mind. This way, if an opportunity presents itself, you are readyErin Kennedy, CPRW, CERW, BS/HR, is a Certified Professional Executive Resume Writer/Career Consultant and President of Professional Resume Services, Inc. Move Over, Gender Pay Gap Theres A New Gap Hurting Women At Work
Move Over, Gender Pay Gap Theres A New Gap Hurting Women At Work This week, purple drank In and McKinsey Co. released the 2017 edition of their Women in the Workplace report. Like in years prior, researchers looked at over 200 companies and surveyed over 70,000 employees. However, this year found a notable difference researchers found a new gap that is holding women back at work.Lean In and McKinsey found that a perception gap existed between men and women at work. Not only do male and female colleagues disagree on whether or not women are given less opportunities, but compared to their female counterparts, male professionals landsee gender equality at work as a mission accomplished.Company commitment to gender diversity is at an all-time high for the third year in a row, researchers wrote in the study. Despite this commitment, progress continues to be too slow and may even be stalling. One of the most powerful reasons for this is a simple one we have blind spots when it comes to diversity.According to the study, significantly mora men than women say that their company offers level playing fields for all employees regardless of their gender. Many of the male employees who agree with this statement work for companies where less than one in ten top executives are women. But how do women feel about how they are supported at work? Per the survey responses, women are more likely to feel that their managers give them less opportunities to grow. They feel that their daily interactions with their direct bosses are more important than the tone platzset by top leadership, a stark contrast to their male colleagues.Elisabeth Kelan, professor of leadership at Cranfield School of Management, notes that direct bosses are affected by the perception gap. Because most dont believe that gender equality is still an issue, they are unaware of their subtle behaviors that are holding women back.It isnt that these men, and sometimes women, get up in the morning and say, OK, Im goi ng to be a barrier to women, Kelan said to the Wall Street Journal. In her own research, separate of the McKinsey study, Kelan shadowed midlevel male managers who were seen as inclusive by their colleagues. Kelan noticed that they each consistently did the followingSuggest women take stretch assignments.Inclusive managers would regularly suggest that overlooked female employees take on tasks that would push them outside of their comfort zone.Laud female employees achievements to others. When discussing their teams progress, midlevel managers would share the successes of their female employees with other managers and executives. Instead of taking leistungspunkt for work that wasnt theirs, inclusive managers always gave credit to the appropriate source.Support bullied employees. When men hepeated or mansplained certain items to other women, managers supported female employees ideas and gave them time and space to discuss their ideas.Praise inclusivity.Though they didnt brag about how inc lusive they were, these managers regularly complimented other managers for promoting and offering additional opportunities to female employees.Despite the efforts made by individuals, companies still have a lot of work to do to create more inclusive environments. Men at work are still more likely than women to say that gender diversity isnt a priority for them.Lets face it, getting more women into profit-generating roles is whats going to change the percentage of women CEOs in the Fortune 500, Ellyn Shook, chief leadership and human-resources officer at global consulting firm Accenture PLC., said to the Wall Street Journal. Inclusive managers, who eventually become sponsors of successful employees, are key to the success of women at work. When the leadership appointmentsare being made, Shook said. The sponsors are at the table saying what their sponsees have done.Much needs to be done by both employers and employees and women and men to achieve gender parity at work. Inclusivity is the best way to close the perception gap by making women more visible in the workplace, the obstacles that they face become more visible as well. Only then can colleagues work together as a team to make work better for everyone.Diversity leads to stronger business results, as numerous studies have shown, the Women in the Workplace 2017 study reads. But we cant unlock the full potential of our workplace until we see how far from equality we really are.
